As dawn broke on a chilly February morning in 1877, a local tinsmith walked from his workshop in Fossgate to the nearby ash pit in Black Horse Passage.

However, as he opened the door to the pit – he spotted a green parcel carefully placed on top of the ash and which when opened revealed the body of a one day old male infant.
With a police investigation soon underway, an inquest into the suspicious death of Baby Doe was now opened.
